So many people get sick while traveling. Many times it is avoidable.
1. Wash your hands with soap frequently. Hand gels do NOT replace 30 seconds of hot soap and water. Make sure to wash hands Before eating and always after the use of the toilet.
2. Avoid local water – buy bottled water. Make sure to check the deal. (many places re-use the plastic water bottles so make sure the seal is intact.
3. Food contamination – try to make sure the food is fresh, cooked thoroughly and served hot. “Street food” can be the best , usually the freshest BUT, check the hygiene (do they use gloves? Do they change gloves after handling money? Are they going to the bathroom with their apron on? If raw food is left out, is it stored properly.
4. Avoid salads, raw fruit & veggies that YOU have not wahsed, peeled or skinned yourself.
5. Eating local foods goes hand in hand with traveling; however, don’t over do it. yYour stomach may not like the local food.
6. Stay active – exercise helps the immune system fight off little bugs
7. Protect yourself against the sun.
a)use a sun block with UVA protector – minimum SPF15
b)Apply sun screen correctly and often
c)cover up with clothes – cotton and linens keep you cool. Don’t forget your sun glass and a sun hat.
d) seek shelter between the hours of 11am – 3pm. (my first time to Brazil we arrived at 10:30 am and the city looked deserted. It was scary- until we found out they stay off the streets during the hottest part of the day)
e) Children and infants should be protected at ALL times
f) take special care if you have pale skin, red hair, freckles and moles
Most times the sun is hotter than you think. Stay hydrated – WATER, not sodas. ALWAYS, ALWAYS Always toake bottled water with you on your excursions.
