Even smart people make mistakes when it comes to travel. Here are a few blunders :
Planning the trip too late. Generally, you cannot get the best deal at the last minute. Yes, you can get “deals” – whether or not you like them is something else. If you are single, carefree, don’t give damn and have “extra throw away money,” you may make out alright.
Last minute reservations on a ship is likely to get you in the very front or very back of the ship on the bottom deck next to the engine room and/or storage and maintenance rooms (lots of scary unwanted noise). Or an ocean view cabin with a life boat stored up against your window.(nothing to see here).
How about shopping for the cheapest hotel room – every day for a week to save $10 a night. Or book one of those online last minute rooms that indicate you don’t have to pay until you get there, only to find upon your arrival that the cheap advertised rooms gone and they only have suite available.
Oh, and what about that cheap airfare? Yeah, you saved $100 but how long is it going to take you to get there and back? How many layovers and flight changes. I once had a client coming from Vancouver, Canada to Oakland, CA for $79 – generally about a 4 hour flight. They save $77. BUT, it took them 9.5 hours to get to Oakland with a stop in Seattle and a stop in Salt Lake City – UGH! who has time for THAT???
Is it worth the frustration? PLAN AHEAD, if possible, at least 10 months out. It gives you time to get your money together, make changes if you need or want to, make sure your reservations are correct and you may even catch a deal – early bird specials. Don’t forget the trip insurance.
